Wines from South Africa

Stellenbosch’s renowned Golden Triangle is named in recognition of the fact that the estates in this area all represent some of South Africa’s best red wine producers. North westerly facing and high on the slopes of the Helderberg the soils in the area are an agglomeration of weathered granite and sandstone with moisture retaining clay underlays. Cooling breezes from False Bay have a moderating effect on temperatures at these estates thus allowing long ripening conditions which improve both flavor and structural components in the resulting wines.

Alto, the Latin name indicating lofty notions in both location and focus, was established in 1693. There are some 230 acres of vines on the estate which is currently a strictly red wine producer.

The wines produced at Alto are encouraged to undergo maloactic fermentation in tank prior to aging in a combination of predominantly French oak with small proportions of American and Hungarian oak employed to add complexity. The wines display classic varietal and terroir specific characteristics.

Alto Rouge

Rich dark fruit, capsicum and spice aromas come to the fore. The wine is rich and full-bodied on the palate with a silky tannic core and lingering finish.

The wine will pair well with roasts, grilled meats and rich pasta dishes.
